Cavalier Wool Holdings has decided to close its Whakatu Wool Scour on November 9 this year due to a drop in wool volume. Its operations will be incorporated into the wool scouring plant at Awatoto. Cavalier Woolscourers Ltd Chief Executive Tony Cunningham said that he hopes to retain as many employees as possible. Cavalier Woolscourers was partly owned by Cavalier Corporation whose chief executive Paul Alston said local concerns of dust, wool and fibres emitted from the plant played no role in the decision to close. He reported that the drop in wool volume was due to falling wool prices, and people choosing to hold on to the wool.
