Fonterra Chairman John Wilson spoke at the dairy co-operative’s annual meeting on Thursday on the myth of the rural-urban divide when it comes to water quality. He confirmed that farmers were just as committed to achieving swimmable rivers as anyone else. He was disappointed that the supposed divide had been leveraged for political gain during this year’s election. He reflected on the findings of the Taranaki Regional Council’s 2017 Healthy Waterways report showing the healthiest streams in 21 years as an example of the industry pulling together. He also commented on the action farmers needed to take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and believed that with access to effective mitigation technologies farmers would adapt to being included in the Emissions Trading Scheme if that occurred.
