Massey University Freshwater Ecologist, Russell Death said the groundwater contamination experienced in Havelock North was likely caused by the ruminant of some animal. Both the Government and the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council have promised to make an inquiry into the incident. Mr Death said any inquiry should go beyond the incident and look at the broader impact of land use on water quality. Prime Minister, John Key said it was unlikely that any inquiry would include agricultural intensification’s impact throughout New Zealand. Green Party Water Spokeswoman, Catherin Delahunty said the issue must be resolved before more irrigation schemes were started.
