[10 March/The Country]

A halal meat exporter, Meatco NZ, was placed into liquidation meaning some overseas Muslims may no longer have access to New Zealand lamb. According to the Meatco website, they were a leading provider of high quality halal lamb and mutton products in the Middle East and South East Asia, and had the capacity to slaughter 15,000 sheep per week. Canterbury resource consenting authority Ecan has no record of a consent being granted, and the Ministry for Primary Industries which grants licences to slaughterhouses, has no record of a licence granted to Meatco. Michael Stacker is the sole shareholder of the company, and has previously been prosecuted for tax offences. The Islamic form of slaughtering animals involved killing through a cut in the jugular vein, carotid artery and windpipe.
