Rabobank Animal Proteins and Sustainability Analyst, Blake Holgate said the rise of alternative proteins needed to be kept in perspective. Mr Holgate’s statement came after Rabobank released a report showing that alternative proteins were on the verge of becoming mainstream and taking market share from traditional meat products. Alternative protein products included plant-based meat substitutes, emerging insect and algae based products, and lab-grown meat products. Rabobank’s report showed that alternative proteins would grow at an annual rate of 8 percent a year in the European Union, while traditional meat product sales would remain flat.
