Walmart Canada has introduced a new “urban supercenter” concept store in Toronto, which features a ‘’Fast Lane’’ checkout. The Fast Lane allows customers to scan products with the My Walmart app whilst they shop and check out by scanning a barcode in the dedicated line which will be paid by the credit card each shopper has placed on file. The new Walmart will also include extended aisles and a remodelled grocery section called Fresh Market, which has organic produce, 100% Canadian meat and seafood. The new Fast Lane resembles Amazon Go technology as the two retailers battle each other for market share. Walmart previously tested its Scan & Go feature at 125 stores in the U.S., but scrapped the effort due to low customer participation and the fact that the technology couldn’t scale the way the company wanted it to.
