[02 September/Food Navigator] Industry group Agricultural Biotechnology Council (ABC) which promotes the use of controversial GM crops is urging Europe to embrace new crop techniques, otherwise they will fall behind the rest of the world. It has been argued that GM crops are necessary in order to feed the growing world sustainably. The report stated that Europe cannot grow all the food it needs, and that there is clear scientific evidence that GM food and feed is safe so there is no reason to not use it. ABC is calling on the UK government to use the UK’s exit from the EU as an opportunity to take advantage of technologies that have been previously blocked by political intervention at an EU level. Surveys in the UK have shown that consumers are largely for GM technology.
