European Parliament’s agriculture committee has backed a ban on vegetarian and vegan products using terminology traditionally associated with meat on their labelling and product descriptions such as steak, sausage and burger. The Vegan Society have sent a letter reporting that the ban would stop European citizens’ right to be informed about how the goods should be consumed. The society also stated that the proposal would place excessive administrative burdens on public entities and does not align with EU policy on diversity. Others report that the use of meat names on plant-based products can be misleading in itself.
