French multinational retailer, Carrefour, will use blockchain to give customers total traceability of its animal and vegetable product ranges. The technology will be applied to eight more product lines. Carrefour’s General Secretary and head of Quality and Food Safety, Laurent Vallee, said becoming the leader of food transition for everyone is their aim and that using blockchain technology was a step towards meeting this. Issues such as cross-contamination, spread of foodborne illness and the cost of recalls could be reduced by blockchain’s access to information and traceability. According to Carrefour’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Alexandre Bompard, Carrefour is the only retail player to use blockchain technology to improve traceability, and by 2018 the system should be present in all Carrefour subsidiaries.
