[13 August/Food Navigator] The foodservice delivery market is booming due to new technology with supermarket sales being under pressure and app developer Ubamarket wants to bring consumers back into the supermarket. Frequent fast food consumption has been clearly associated with non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, obesity and coronary heart disease. Ubamarket has found that consumers have a knowledge gap and are unsure how to cook healthy meals from scratch and on top of this, see going to the supermarket as inconvenient. They aim to help shoppers overcome these factors through their app which allows consumers to shop by recipe, by the layout of a store and by being able to ‘scan-and-go’ products without having to queue, which is also aimed at minimising impulse purchases. It is currently being rolled out in a variety of UK retailers including Warner’s Budgens, Spar and Co-op.
