Commercial fisherman in Southland are demanding that the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) halts its plans to put surveillance technology on all 1200 commercial fishing boats. The technology is intended to reducing non-compliance with regulations, such as the illegal dumping of fish. MPI officials faced opposition from fisherman in Invercargill who said the change was being rushed through. He said that there were real concerns that a failure of technology could force fishing to halt until the issues are resolved.
