Greg Peyroux and Benoit Auvray, the co-founders of Dunedin-based Iris Data Science have been working on sheep facial recognition to easily and cheaply identify sheep. The facial recognition will potentially remove the need for ear-tags and also solves other farm management issues. The project was displayed at MobileTECH 2019 in Rotorua in April and at TEXpo during Dunedin Techweek and gained interest from various people in the industry. Mr Peryoux was cautiously optimistic about the potential of the project to disrupt industry as it is still in early prototype stages. Farmers wanting to use it would need to install a camera system, perhaps on a race, to collect images of their sheep.
