Morgan Educare won the Sustainable Schools Award at the Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards last week. Centre manager Paula Mihaka says that while the youngsters are not so much aware of the importance of the award; there is no doubt they are aware of the environment. She says that the long-term goal for the school is to become focused on permaculture, sustainability and self-sufficiency. To help achieve this the centre has installed solar panels, upcycled tractor tyres to make edible gardens, installed a compost bin, collected unwanted clothing from staff and whanau and recycled all paper products. Future projects include the collection of rainwater from the roof to be used for water play and garden watering. The cost of the system is about $6500, and the $2000 prize money from the award will go towards it.
