The Government plans to cap dairy herds is ill thought out political grandstanding, according to National Party Leader, Simon Bridges. He said that the plan to regulate the number of cattle farmers were allowed per hectare was another example of the Coalition Government’s assault on the regions. Environment Minister, David Parker, said there were too many cows and that in some areas the number of cows exceeded the amount the environment could sustain. Mr Bridges noted that National agreed that water and environmental improvements needed to be made, however they needed to be achieved through implementing a considered plan that all parties can work through over time, including urban communities. Mr Bridges suggested that the coalition government were coming out with bold statements driven by values, and not actually by hard evidence.
