[3 November/ODT Rural Life]

Public consultation has been launched on the review of the Dairy Industry Restructuring Act 2001, the legislation which enabled the formation and operation of Fonterra. The government had announced the review was in process earlier in the year and Agriculture Minister, Damien O’Connor, launched the public consultation at a dairy farm in Outram. Mr O’Connor is looking to ensure the country’s biggest export sector is fit for the future with the review covering entry and exit obligations, farm-gate milk price settings, contestability for farmer milk and incentives and disincentives to move dairy to a more sustainable, high-value producing sector. The Minister called on all those with an interest in the dairy sector to take part in a frank appraisal of the issues.
