Hamilton biotech firm Quantec has launched a nutrition drink which took out this year’s supreme award from the natural health products industry for the second year in a row. This is a reflection of the success the flax seed oil and milk protein drink has had on the Chinese market. Raewyn McPhillips, Chief Executive of Quantec reported that getting the product onto shelves in China proved very difficult from packaging to patenting when trying to overcome the barriers towards product claim laws in China. Opportunities exist to develop markets for the proprietary product IDP especially in developing a non-antibiotic treatment for animals and exploring its role in the human microbiome. Lipid profiles found in milk that might lend themselves to skin-care products are also of interest. Company founder Rob Claycomb reports that the company is looking to do things that have not yet been achieved, to keep the value-adding aspect of the business.
