Ministry for Primary industries has proposed changes to import standards for vehicles and containers with the intention of keeping the brown marmorated stink bug out of New Zealand. Biosecurity New Zealand spokeswoman Dr Cath Duthie reports that the pest is continuing to spread through Europe and the United States. The Ministry is seeking public feedback on the proposed changes which include extending the list of countries that have requirements to treat vehicles, machinery and equipment imports before they arrive in New Zealand. This will double the countries needing pre-treatment to 33. As at the end of March, border officers have detected 123 live stink bugs this season.
