Fisheries New Zealand is considering putting a temporary ban on pāua fishing on beaches north of Dunedin. The ban will be lifted recreationally once the species has recovered, Fisheries Minister Stuart Nash said in a statement. The reason for the proposed change was due to the declining numbers in the area over the past years. The banning of set nets was also proposed because it cannot determine what is caught in them when set.
